Positive Law Enforcement Officer Encounters
Mission
The leaders of six law enforcement agencies in the greater New Hanover County area are working together to promote positive relationships between law enforcement officers and the citizens they serve.
The initiative will help to improve communications and try to clarify law enforcement processes during traffic stops, while officers work to listen to citizens. With both the officer and citizen in mind, they developed the slogan, "Listen, Explain. Comply, Complain."
Meaning, they would like officers to respectfully listen to citizens if possible and explain the nature of the stop, while citizens are asked to comply with the officers directions and if there is a problem with the stop complain later.
The goal of this campaign is simply to make sure everyone gets home safe, and to encourage positive relationships and mutual respect.
