WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH ADOPTS SOLDIERS; ADOPT-A-SOLDIER PROGRAM CONTINUES TO GAIN COMMUNITY SUPPORT
WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH – At the September 27, 2007 Board of Aldermen meeting, the Board approved a resolution to support members of Company A, 2 nd Battalion, 504 th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82 nd Airborne Division of the United States Army through the Adopt-A-Soldier Program. This Company, also known as “The Devils in Baggy Pants,” is currently serving our nation in Iraq and has a long and distinguished military history of more than 50 years of service.
The Adopt-A-Soldier Program is designed to reach those soldiers that may not have families and relatives to provide support while deployed to Iraq.
This effort is directly related to the leadership and assistance of Wrightsville Beach resident Ms. Jean Van Velsor.
Ms. Van Velsor, volunteer coordinator for the Adopt-A-Soldier Program, explained that an individual or a group can participate in the program by adopting a soldier and pledging a once-a-month commitment to send a letter and a care package to their soldier.
“The response has been excellent,” Ms. Van Velsor said. “This is a way that we can show our support to our troops and boost their morale.”
Each month, town staff sends a care package to their adopted soldier in Iraq. Members of the community are encouraged to do the same by adopting a soldier as well.
This is the second military unit that the town has worked with as part of the Adopt-A-Soldier Program. On July 13, 2006 the town adopted Company D, First Battalion of the 125 th STRIKE, U.S. Army. That Unit returned home earlier this year.
For more information on the Adopt-A-Soldier Program, contact Wrightsville Beach Town Hall at 256-7900.

TOWN OFFICIALS MEET WITH STATE TO DECIDE BUILDING PERMIT, NORTHEAST INTERCEPTOR FATE
WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH –Officials from Wrightsville Beach, New Hanover County and the City of Wilmington met with representatives from the North Carolina Division of Water Quality (DWQ) on Tuesday, May 15, 2007 for four hours regarding building permits requiring water and sewer services.
The moratorium was directed from the DWQ on Wednesday, May 09, 2007 regarding areas contributing to the flow into the Northeast Interceptor System.
The following direction is provided from Tuesday’s meeting regarding the processing of building permits for Wrightsville Beach:
-
Residential and Commercial building permits requiring water and sewer services that add to the existing flow into the Northeast Interceptor system will not be issued. (Example: A two-bedroom, two-bath, single-family residence being redeveloped into a duplex with four bedrooms and four bathrooms).
-
Building permits for residential and commercial renovations that do not add or contribute to the existing flow into the Northeast Interceptor system will be processed and issued at the discretion of the municipality. (Example: Replacement of existing structure with no expansion in sewer flow requirements or simple renovations, ie., decks, roofs, windows, etc).
The current moratorium on water and sewer connection permits will remain in effect until further clarification and direction from DWQ is received the week of May 21-25, which may result in alteration of the current restrictive measures.
