Facilities Maintenance Mechanic

Performs responsible semi-skilled work in the maintenance and care of Town, buildings, streets, and related Town properties.


An employee in this class performs a variety of semi-skilled and unskilled tasks involving manual labor requiring the use of hand tools and light and medium equipment operation. All street maintenance including asphalt repair and concrete repairs; building maintenance involving trade skills including electrical, plumbing, and related skills. The employee may be subject to OSHA's final standards on blood borne pathogens when cleaning public rest rooms. Operate heavy equipment such as street sweeper, back hoes, dump trucks, etc.

Desirable Education and Experience

Graduation from high school and some related equipment operation or mechanical experience including some public contact experience.


Special Requirement

Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license

Police Department

POSITION:    Police Officer

LOCATION:   Wrightsville Beach, NC

SALARY:        $32,508-$50,518 DOE;


The Town of Wrightsville Beach is currently accepting applications for the position of Police Officer. The police department provides full police services to the community, including community policing, traffic and criminal law enforcement, emergency response, investigations and special events. The department serves a public of approximately 2500 permanent residents and a summer population that swells to over 25,000 residents, visitors and summer guests.


Selected candidates will have to complete an extensive pre-hire process that will include a medical examination, polygraph examination, psychological examination, emotional intelligence testing, and the successful completion of North Carolina’s police officers physical abilities test (POPAT). Successful candidates will also have to complete the department’s orientation and field training program prior to permanent assignment. The expected duration of the selection process is 4-6 weeks.

All applicants must already have their Basic Law Enforcement Certification and eligible for immediate certification with N.C. Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission. All applicants must also possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license at the time of appointment. An Associate’s Degree with a major in police science, law enforcement or criminal justice is preferred.

General Statement of Duties

This position requires the ability to perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled work as a team member engaged in the construction, installation and repair of water and sewer lines.  Work involves the operation of construction equipment in the installation, replacement and repair of water and sewer pipes. Also includes making taps to water and sewer mains, installing hydrants, meters, and valves, and making repairs to the water and sewer system.  Employees are subject to on-call and call-back work.


Essential Duties

·         Operates heavy equipment and tapping machine to make water and sewer taps and service connections.

·         Lays water and sewer pipe; adjusts pipe to proper grade and depth; repairs and replaces sewer and water lines and related facilities.

·         Operates sewer rodder, jet, and vacuum machines to unstop sewer lines.

·         Operates backhoe, front end loader, dump trucks, jackhammers, tampers, pipe threading machines, tapping machines, trenchers, air compressors, and boring machine. Makes repairs to storm drainage system, asphalt, and other utility cuts.

·         Knowledge of municipal water and sewer service policies. Ability to read utility line  

·         maps and operation and service manuals.


Required skills, knowledge and abilities

·   High school diploma (or GED equivalent); experience in construction-related work (including distribution and collection systems); experience in the operation of heavy equipment

·   Possession of valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina.


Desired skills, knowledge and abilities

Possess or ability to obtain C-well, C-distribution or Collection II system operator certification from the State of North Carolina (or similar state recognition from another state).

Sanitation Superintendent

Job Title:                                Sanitation Superintendent

Job Status:                            Full Time

Pay Range:                            $37,632 to $58,481 (hiring to maximum range)



The Public Works Department is seeking a Sanitation Superintendent.  Responsibilities include planning, organizing and directing the work of Sanitation Workers and Equipment Operators in the daily collection of residential and commercial garbage, trash and solid waste disposal.  This position also requires the ability to operate a variety of heavy equipment and works with the Public Works Director to develop policies and procedures, ensuring that services are delivered safely and efficiently.  Participates in hiring, conducts training and performance coaching and evaluation of staff.  Involves considerable public contact in providing public assistance and problem resolution.   Makes field inspections on routes, observing staff performance for proper use of safe and efficient procedures and equipment; adjusts routing for residential, commercial and yard waste collection efficiency. Ensures proper trash collection and cleaning of beach areas; collection and disposal of residential and commercial garbage, yard waste, curbside appliances and furniture; management of the Town Recycling Center including sorting and transportation of recyclables.


Qualifications: Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures regarding the operation and maintenance of solid waste collection and disposal. Thorough knowledge of occupational hazards workplace safety.  Considerable knowledge of modern effective supervisory principles and practices including effective communication and leadership skills.  Ability to plan, organize, schedule and supervise work and employees effectively. Ability to operate sanitation equipment. 


Education Requirements: Graduation from high school supplemented by training in solid waste collection principles including supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.   Must possess a valid North Carolina Commercial license or the ability to obtain.
